Announcing Felix Toro: the New Director of Sacatar
Greetings,
Twenty-five years ago, we found an ideal property for an international artist residency on the island of Itaparica in Bahia, Brasil. We chose Bahia because it is a well-spring of creativity at the confluence of a multiplicity of native, African, and European cultures which have melded and thrived under historic conditions of penury and repression. In the last twenty-three years, we have welcomed over 500 artists from 74 countries to the Instituto Sacatar. We now welcome Felix Toro as Sacatar´s new executive director. Felix will divide his time between the program on the island and our first office across the Bay of All Saints in Salvador da Bahia. We offer Felix our complete confidence, and we know the Sacatar family — board members, staff members, and artists of all disciplines — share our enthusiasm. Bem-vindo, Felix!

About Felix
Born in São Paulo, Brazil, the new executive director of the Instituto Sacatar brings a background in community organizing and art education. Rooted in the philosophies of Paulo Freire and Lina Bo Bardi, Felix Toro, an educator, curator, and cultural producer, has extensive experience in institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art of Bahia and the Goethe Institut. He has led museum education departments, managed artist residencies, and coordinated international grant projects.
Felix has worked in different contexts (São Paulo, Salvador, New York, and Geneva), and besides Portuguese and English (his native languages), he also speaks Spanish and French.
He holds a BA in History from the University of São Paulo and an MA in Arts/Curating from HES-SO/Geneva.
His goal is to enhance Sacatar’s global, national, and Bahia connections, emphasizing the importance of artistic residencies. Felix aims to strengthen collaboration between local and international artists, bridging cultural gaps. He envisions increased participation of Bahia residents in activities with global artists and hopes to maximize the benefits for local artists through Sacatar’s international connections. Recognizing Bahia’s cultural richness, Felix’s objective is to position Itaparica and Salvador as hubs for artistic exchange and production.
