Artists are selected through a rigorous multi-tiered process.
SACATAR OPEN SELECTION PROCESS: Sacatar awards Fellowships based on the applicant’s
talent, professional background and proposed project. The selection of artists through our open
unrestricted application process is as follows:
Independent pre-selection committees evaluate the work samples of all applicants. Literary texts are reviewed either in Portuguese, in English or in English translation. The pre-selection committees make recommendations to the Final Selection Committee.
The Final Selection Committee – an interdisciplinary group of individuals who share a strong commitment to the arts and creative thinking in general – carefully reviews the work samples, the curricula vitae and the proposals of the recommended candidates advanced by the pre-selection committees. Taking into account the quality of the work submitted, the professional expertise of the candidates and the diversity of projects to be supported by the Instituto, the Final Selection Committee recommends 40-50 individuals for Fellowships.
From the list submitted by the Final Selection Committee, the staff of the Instituto and/or its Board of Directors interview the semifinalists and award Fellowships to 28-32 artists each year, based on space availability, appropriateness of the proposals, the educational goals of the Instituto and the cultural diversity of the Fellows.
In addition to our open, unrestricted application process, we offer Fellowships in partnership with other non-profit and/or governmental agencies around the world. These Fellowships often have restrictions as to discipline, age, nationality or country of residence. In most cases, the selection of artists is made through a similar process to that described above. In some cases, artists are nominated for the Fellowships.
